COVID-19 hasn’t been kind to the world! The number of infected patients and deaths in the U.S is shocking. The pandemic has been affecting different U.S city, in various ways. However, amidst all these increasing death counts and coronavirus positive cases, there’s news about its possible treatment. Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, asserted that there’s a new drug that points towards a promising clinical trial that can move towards treating the COVID-19 successfully. This drug is “remdesivir,” which, according to Fauci, isn’t the complete answer. But it is a crucial step the medical fraternity needs to take. The Kansas City doctors are closely following the drug progress.

What does remdesivir do?

Simply put, the remdesivir stops the replication of RNA synthesis. It means that the virus can’t replicate or multiply in other bodies anymore. According to Dr. Dana Hawkinson, who’s a specialist in infectious disease at the University of Kansas Health System, opined that this drug might have some beneficial outcomes. It can enhance the recovery time from 15 to 11 days. Hence, there’s a need for organized and well-observed clinical trials, to check how this drug, along with treatments, work on novel coronavirus. However, the doctors also suggest there are a few drawbacks that might arise.

The possible drawback

Different doctors have shared their views about this subject. According to Dr. Sarah Boyd, Infectious Disease Physician, Saint Luke’s Health System, it is always about searching balance. That means, on the one hand, doctors are enthusiastic to follow a probable remedy to help people heal, and, on the other, they need to wait for the standard science and its outcomes to ensure that the treatment is secure before reaching the market. So, as doctors welcome remdevisir, they are not sure if that’s the final word. The doctors yet don’t consider it to be a silver bullet, that clears the virus from the human body. The trials have got scheduled to occur on Kansas City metro.

Dr. Sarah Boyd further asserted that it’s based on the location as well as the disease incidence at the site for medication distribution. From the medical perspective, they would have to keep on observing further developments. Hence, Boyd and other doctors are asking people to remain patient, as the medical fraternity in Kansas City attempts to find the solution.

The future clinical trial

The University of Kansas Medical Center has risen to the cause of finding the cure for COVID-19! Currently, it is searching for about 500 area health care workers for taking part in a nationwide clinical trial. The medical trials got scheduled to assess the hydroxychloroquine. Which is also a drug that’s touted to be a possible cure for novel coronavirus. This drug today gets sold as Plaquenil and is considered to be crucial for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis patients. It can also get used for averting malaria.

This drug made headlines and grabbed the attention of President Trump, immediately after a French medical study confirmed its efficiency for treating COVID-19 patients. However, its efficacy depends on its pairing with antibiotic azithromycin. Some issues with that study stopped its use.

Today, the U.S FDA has sanctioned using hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 positive patients. Doctors are witnessing mixed reports. The promising updates are the attempts that are being made to find a probable cure, to lessen the global suffering.
