It’s no surprise to most that I love blogging, after all that’s the reason I have a blog! If you’ve been toying with the idea of blogging for a while, but haven’t pulled the trigger, then you may be in need of some simple tips for starting your own blog. From deciding that topic to write about, to setting things up, here are my top 4 tips for starting your own blog and getting that ball rolling.

1. Follow Your Passion

I’m super passionate about lifestyle hacks and improving my business, lifestyle, and health and fitness. For that reason I decided to do a magazine style blog that encompasses a range of topics. Your passion may be researching the world’s fastest crossbow, or home renovations like installing Brock White cladding panels. Whatever your passion, just know there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of people, interested in reading about your favourite topic. Write out a list of topics you see yourself having enough ideas for blog posts for the next year, and then choose on of those to go with when creating your blog. Choosing something you’re passionate about and see yourself enjoying for years to come, will make the entire process a lot more fun.

2. Buy Your Own Domain
While there are options to set up blogs on host sites like WordPress.com, it is much better to set up your own ‘.com’ name to host your blog on. Having your own domain from the beginning will save you time in the long run, as you wont have to worry about migrating it later on. If you’d like the option to make your website some form of income source down the line, then having your own domain name on private hosting is the best way to move forward with this. Domains are relatively affordable, so it wont be a large investment from the beginning.

3. Create Your Social Profiles

First things first, you’re going to have to decide which social profiles you’d like to feature on your blog. Which ones you choose to focus on will depend as well on your audience. Younger audiences tend to prefer more video based platforms like TikTok and Instagram reels, while older generations are more confident on Facebook. Setting up your social profiles is a good idea when you buy your domain name to ensure the names you want are available across all platforms. If you’re not sure what platforms you’ll be on, it could be worth making accounts for all of them anyway so you have that name reserved in case you want to go on there down the line.

4. Network With Other Bloggers
There are so many reasons it’s a great idea to network with other bloggers. Not only can you build some very special friendships with people who share the same interests you to, but it can be a great way to build up your blog too. Guest posting is a wonderful way to help the SEO of your website and to gain readers from elsewhere. If you find yourself on Pinterest, joining some group boards with other bloggers can be a great way to get your Pin in front of others too. You’ll be able to share your struggles and successes with your blogger friends, and hopefully learn and support each other while you navigate this exciting industry.
