7 Ways to Maximise Your Bedroom Storage

Our bedrooms are meant to be relaxing, peaceful havens where we can get our heads down for a good sleep or escape the manic pace the house seems to function at. Find the room a mess though and suddenly, the idyllic setting you had hoped for resembles more a war zone than a space of peace and tranquility.

This is often down to storage, or the lack of it we should say. Needless clutter fills floors, drawers, wardrobes and more, all overspilling into places it doesn’t need to be, making your bedroom far from what you want it to be. So, we’ve picked ten ways to maximise your bedroom storage that allow you to be free from random piles of clothes, free from ever-increasing stacks of books and free from items you never knew you owned until you tripped over them that morning!

1. Fitted wardrobes

We should start with perhaps one of the most obvious. Fitted wardrobes are one of the best storage solutions you could look for in a bedroom. Rather than having a hulking flat pack unit jutting out from a wall and eating up valuable space, a fitted wardrobe helps you create space in places you didn’t think possible. Fitting into areas where sloped ceilings and awkward spaces are prominent, these made-to-measure wardrobes ensure you maximise the potential of your bedroom. Thanks to the design being built around your room, you’ll also benefit from the added character and uniqueness they bring.

2. Ottoman bed

It’s another obvious one, but it’s worth mentioning it! An ottoman offers an invisible storage option where clothing, additional bedding or toys can be kept off the floor. Ideal in a smaller bedroom, an ottoman not only helps keep the floors clear, but it will help maintain the organised and relaxed vibe you want your room to create thanks to less clutter meeting your every step!

3. Wicker baskets and bins

These aren’t bins for your rubbish, but rather stylish storage that adds a pop of colour and an interesting addition to your bedroom. You could use them for pillows, blankets, toys, and even decorative flowers if you choose. Style them up for a touch of colour that enhances your bedroom’s relaxing atmosphere. You could also look at fun storage boxes if it’s a kid’s room. Toys, books, games and clothing can all be kept in neatly stacked boxes that stand next to the bed or in a little nook that otherwise goes unused.

4. High shelves near the ceiling

Another great possibility for a smaller room. High shelves can also work in a bigger room, but they may appear over-imposing if you have too many of them. If it’s a small room, high shelves allow you to put the items you use rarely or maybe clutter other shelves you use more often. Ornaments, for example, look beautiful on a shelf but if that same shelf is where you put your hair straighteners, make-up, books or anything else, they soon become lost, and the room looks overfilled. Use the higher shelves for your ornaments and decorative pieces and it’ll add a spot of character to the room or use them to place the storage boxes we mentioned above to free up even more floor space.

5. Storage headboard

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, and it provides plenty of great storage options. An ottoman as we mentioned earlier is ideal for bedroom storage, but you can further enhance your floor space and the harmonious, free flow of your room by adding headboard storage. With shelves built into the side; your bedtime reading, your devices, chargers and more can all be stored within the same space your bed fills rather than on an additional table, chair or chest of drawers.

6. End of bed cabinets

Much like the storage headboard at one end of the bed, storage cabinets at the other end can help you take items such as shoes, clothing, bedding or toys off the floor or away from other overfilled areas. Sized to match the width of the bed, they add a little more character and look great, especially if you make sure they match the headboard in colour!

7. Declutter and finesse

Whilst we’ve given six great storage solutions, you won’t be able to utilise them all to their best until you declutter and finesse your room. There will be countless items in wardrobes and drawers that you no longer use. They are all filling up essential space! A good clear-out allows you to make the most of the storage you already have, before investing heavily elsewhere. It will also give you the chance to rediscover items you thought you no longer had and find older items that you may wish to donate to charity.

There are countless other ways you can add to the storage capabilities of your bedroom, but we find that these few can really help transform a room into something more relaxing and welcoming. Try it out and see how much better you feel knowing the pathway to your bed will always remain clear!
